CESCON prides its involvement in some of Melbourne’s most iconic and prestigious structures. 1 Riverside Quay, Southbank is one of such projects which comprises of a multilevel apartment building located within the heart of Melbourne. The boundary wall of this property is a brick wall built in 1865 and features English-bond face work bricks which is representative of the old Victorian heritage. After the Melbourne Earthquake in September 2021, the property managers were concerned regarding certain crack development within the heritage walls as well as in some of the apartments of the new build.
CESCON carried out an inspection of the subject property noting all cracks and defects and highlighted their most probable causes as remedies. Due to the nature of this project and a mix of old and new structures, this project required rigorous assessment and in depth study of existing documents to provide informed and accurate advice to our clients.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW?
Structural/forensic engineering inspections of heritage buildings are critical evaluations of the condition and stability of these historically significant structures. These inspections aim to identify any potential hazards and assess the need for repairs or renovations to ensure the preservation of the building for future generations. Educating clients about the importance of these inspections can help them understand the need for proper maintenance and upkeep of these cultural landmarks, and the role of the structural/forensic engineer in assessing their structural integrity. Additionally, it is important for clients to understand the unique challenges and considerations involved in working with heritage buildings, such as respecting the original construction methods and materials, and navigating any relevant legal and regulatory frameworks.
